Screen Printing Process

About

Year: 2024

Screen printing isn’t just ink on paper—it’s trial, error, and happy accidents. This summer, I traded pixels for pulled prints, designing a business card, book cover, and postcard by hand. Every misprint taught me something, every layer of ink added character. Perfection wasn’t the goal—learning to let the process take over was.

Why This Project Got Me Excited

Why This Project Got Me Excited

Screen printing isn’t just about ink and paper—it’s a hands-on, tactile way to turn design into something real. Spending a summer learning the craft gave me a new appreciation for the physicality of design. Every print, every misaligned layer, every happy accident taught me something new.

Growing up around traditional "macho" mindsets, I always questioned why taking care of yourself was seen as "unmanly." As a design student, I saw the perfect chance to shake things up with my final project. The skincare market was screaming for a brand that could speak to guys without the whole "extreme sports in a bottle" vibe or the clinical whitewashing. I wanted to create something that my friends would actually want to put on their bathroom shelf.

The Reality Check

The Reality Check

It’s one thing to design digitally; it’s another to bring that design to life by pulling ink through a screen. Screen printing is unpredictable—colors bleed, misprints happen, and alignment is a game of patience. Perfection wasn’t the goal; embracing the process was.

I started by throwing out everything I knew about "masculine" branding. Instead, I focused on what actually matters to my target audience:

  • No-nonsense solutions that work

  • Products that feel premium but not pretentious

  • Design that looks good but doesn't scream for attention

  • Information that's clear and straight to the point

What I Made (AND MESSED UP)

Breaking It Down

(My Way)

The magic of screen printing is in the imperfections. I learned to lean into them—misprints turned into unexpected textures, and overprinting created richer, layered visuals. Instead of controlling every detail, I let the process surprise me.

The Aha Moment

Breaking It Down

(My Way)

Sometimes, the best ideas come from mistakes. Printing taught me to trust the process, adapt quickly, and appreciate the beauty of imperfection.
